Enneagram at work: how do two types work together?

Most friction at work isn’t about bad intentions. Two people simply plan, decide, give feedback and handle pressure in different ways. The Enneagram helps you see those differences early, so you can agree how to work together before they turn into a problem.

No type is a better colleague

Every type brings something useful to a team, and every pair of types has moments where they work easily together and moments that need a conversation. Two people of the same type can also work very differently. Use your types as a starting point, then check with the real person.

Where two colleagues most often differ

Put two types side by side and three things usually matter most:

None of these makes a pair good or bad. They show you what to agree on early.

How you work with someone, in 10 minutes

  1. Take the free work test (5–8 minutes). Ask your colleague to take it too, or pick the type you think fits them.
  2. Open the X-Map for Work, pick both types and see ten everyday moments at work side by side.
  3. Start with the moments marked “take care”. Pick one and agree how you’ll handle it, using the “Try this” line.

What “in sync”, “meet halfway” and “take care” mean

In the X-Map, each moment sits on a line between two ways of working, for example “talk to think” and “think, then talk”. Neither end is better.

A pair with several “take care” moments can still work very well together. It just helps to agree how, early.

Questions people ask

Which Enneagram types work best together?

No pairing is best or worst. Some pairs share more of the same habits, so the work feels easy from the start. Others are more different, which can bring balance and also more friction. What helps is knowing where you differ and agreeing how you’ll handle it. You can see that for any two types in the X-Map for Work.

Should we use the Enneagram to decide who works together, or who to hire?

No. A type describes tendencies, not ability or performance. Use it to understand each other and agree how to work, never to rank, label or leave people out.

What if my colleague hasn’t taken the test?

You can pick the type you think fits them in the X-Map and treat it as a guess. Better still, invite them to take the free work test and talk about the results together.

Can I see a whole team at once?

Yes. The free Team Simulator from Business Enneagram Asia, our sister site for companies, shows a whole team’s patterns at once.

How do I know my own type?

Take the free work test. It takes 5–8 minutes. If your top types are close, read the page for each one and see which you recognise most.

A type is a mirror, not a label. It shows how someone tends to love, work or train, never who they have to be.
