Type 4 · The Individualist and Type 5 · The Observer. No two types are right or wrong to work together. This page shows how you may meet in ten everyday moments at work, with one thing to try in each. Use it to agree how you work, not to judge each other.
Every person is different. Read these as tendencies to talk about, not as facts about anyone.
Each line runs between two ways of working. The numbers show where each type often sits. Neither end is better.
An easy working fit. Watch for the blind spots you share.
Start here: Talk about these first. This is where the two of you are furthest apart: taking feedback.
Try this: Agree the must-haves up front and leave the rest open.
Try this: You talk and think in similar ways. Make sure the quieter people in the room still get a turn.
Try this: You work at a similar pace. Build in one buffer day before anything important.
Try this: You decide at a similar speed. Before a big call, ask one person outside the two of you what you might be missing.
Try this: You see risk the same way. For big calls, ask someone with a different view to check.
Try this: Your styles match. Keep it regular, and say what's working, not only what to fix.
Try this: Say up front what it's about and that the working relationship is fine. Then keep it simple and specific.
Try this: You like recognition in a similar way. Easy, just make it specific.
Try this: You react to pressure in a similar way. Agree now what each of you will do when a crunch hits.
Try this: You handle disagreement alike. Watch the shared blind spot: if you both avoid it, book a time; if you both push, pause first.

Open in the X-MapTake the free testNo pair is right or wrong to work together. In the ten moments above, a Type 4 and a Type 5 are in sync in 8 moments, meet halfway in 1 moment and are marked “take care” in 1 moment. That shows you what to agree on first, not how well you will work together.
A Type 4 is often energised by work with meaning, and room to be creative. A Type 5 is often energised by time to think, and problems worth solving.
The biggest gap is often in taking feedback. Agree together how you'll handle it, using the “Try this” line.
You can pick the type you think fits them in the X-Map for Work and treat it as a guess. Better still, invite them to take the free work test (5–8 minutes) and talk about it together.
A type is a mirror, not a label. It shows how someone tends to love, work or train, never who they have to be.
