Work · The nine types
Type 1 · The Reformer at work
How a Type 1 may work, what gives them energy and what can happen under pressure. Read it for yourself, or to work better with a colleague. It’s a starting point for a conversation, not a label.
At a glance
- Energised by
- Clear standards and work done properly.
- Drained by
- Sloppy work, shortcuts and rules that change for no reason.
- In their words
- “Tell me clearly what good looks like, and tell me when I've got it right.”
If you are a Type 1
- At work, you may
- set a high bar and make sure the job is done properly, not just done.
- Under pressure, you may
- get critical of others and of yourself, and check everything again because you don't trust it will be right.
- One step to try
- Before you correct something, ask: does this change the result, or only how I'd do it? Let one piece go out at "good enough" this week.
If you work with a Type 1
- What motivates them
- Clear standards and the chance to get things right; recognise the care that goes into the work.
- Giving them feedback
- Be specific and about the work, starting with what is right; avoid a vague "not good enough".
Type 1 in ten everyday moments at work
This is where a Type 1 often sits in the X-Map for Work. In each moment, a colleague may sit close to you or far away.
- Planning: Wants a clear plan, done properly, step by step.
- Meetings: Speaks when the point is right and worth making.
- Deadlines & pace: On time and done right; late work bothers them.
- Making decisions: Decides once it's clear what's right; checks the details first.
- Risk: Careful; wants it done properly before going further.
- Giving feedback: Points out what needs fixing, clearly and soon.
- Taking feedback: Takes it seriously; wants it fair and specific.
- Recognition: Values a quiet, specific “well done, that was right.”
- Under pressure: Works harder and tightens the standards.
- Disagreement: Raises it when something isn't right.

What is an Enneagram Type 1 like at work?
Many Type 1s are energised by clear standards and work done properly. They can be drained by sloppy work, shortcuts and rules that change for no reason. It’s a tendency, not a rule, so ask your colleague what helps them work well.
How do I work well with a Type 1?
Start with what tends to motivate them: clear standards and the chance to get things right; recognise the care that goes into the work. When you give feedback: be specific and about the work, starting with what is right; avoid a vague "not good enough".
Which type works best with a Type 1?
