Work · The nine types
Type 2 · The Giver at work
How a Type 2 may work, what gives them energy and what can happen under pressure. Read it for yourself, or to work better with a colleague. It’s a starting point for a conversation, not a label.
At a glance
- Energised by
- Helping people do well, in a warm team.
- Drained by
- Being taken for granted in a cold, transactional team.
- In their words
- “A simple thank-you goes a long way with me. Ask what I need, too.”
If you are a Type 2
- At work, you may
- look after people, you notice who needs help before they ask.
- Under pressure, you may
- say yes to too much, quietly keep count of what you've given, and feel hurt when nobody notices.
- One step to try
- Before you say yes to the next request, look at your own list first. And ask for help once this week, plainly.
If you work with a Type 2
- What motivates them
- Being seen and thanked, and knowing the effort helped someone.
- Giving them feedback
- Acknowledge the effort first, then raise what to change privately and gently; avoid criticism in public.

- Risk: Will take a chance for people they care about.
- Giving feedback: Wraps it in warmth, usually one-to-one.
- Taking feedback: Takes it to heart; wants to know the relationship is fine.
- Recognition: Loves a heartfelt thank-you, in public or in person.
- Under pressure: Helps everyone else first, sometimes forgetting themselves.
- Disagreement: Smooths things over to protect the relationship.
