Type 2 · The Giver and Type 8 · The Challenger. No two types are right or wrong to work together. This page shows how you may meet in ten everyday moments at work, with one thing to try in each. Use it to agree how you work, not to judge each other.
Every person is different. Read these as tendencies to talk about, not as facts about anyone.
Each line runs between two ways of working. The numbers show where each type often sits. Neither end is better.
A good mix of easy ground and places to meet halfway.
Start here: Talk about these first. This is where the two of you are furthest apart: giving feedback, taking feedback and disagreement.
Try this: You plan in a similar way. Every few weeks, check the plan still fits what is actually happening.
Try this: You talk and think in similar ways. Make sure the quieter people in the room still get a turn.
Try this: Set the real deadline plus one check-in halfway.
Try this: Agree a decision date up front, enough time for one of you, not so long that the other gets stuck waiting.
Try this: Agree a limit up front: how much you'll put in, and when you'll review it.
Try this: Ask each other once: “How do you want feedback from me?” Then use their answer, not your habit.
Try this: Say up front what it's about and that the working relationship is fine. Then keep it simple and specific.
Try this: You like recognition in a similar way. Easy, just make it specific.
Try this: When it gets busy, say what you need, more space, or more check-ins.
Try this: Agree a simple rule: the direct one asks before telling; the calmer one says “I see it differently” within a day.

Open in the X-MapTake the free testNo pair is right or wrong to work together. In the ten moments above, a Type 2 and a Type 8 are in sync in 3 moments, meet halfway in 4 moments and are marked “take care” in 3 moments. That shows you what to agree on first, not how well you will work together.
A Type 2 is often energised by helping people do well, in a warm team. A Type 8 is often energised by real responsibility and straight talk.
The biggest gaps are often in: giving feedback, taking feedback and disagreement. Pick one and agree together how you'll handle it, using the “Try this” line.
You can pick the type you think fits them in the X-Map for Work and treat it as a guess. Better still, invite them to take the free work test (5–8 minutes) and talk about it together.
A type is a mirror, not a label. It shows how someone tends to love, work or train, never who they have to be.
